1.Junior Residentship?

Various medical and dental colleges recruit fresh BDS graduates at a post of Junior resident to work on a contractual basis at a payscale of Rs. 40-50k .Through this the dentist not only is able to earn good but also gains a good deal of practical exposure and knowledge. If one is able to bag this position , it kickstarts the career of a budding dentist in an unprecedented manner. The only catch however is the extreme competition. For a vacancy of 2-3 seats per government dental college, application of more than 1200 dentists are received. Some prestigious colleges conduct examinations for recruitment on these posts. After a rigorous procedure of written examinaton and interview, these 2-3 seats are filled accordingly.

Hence, though becoming a junior resident is a golden opportunity as a clinician , it is equally strenuous and time demanding on the part of the applicant.

2. Army Dental Corps

The Indian Army provides recruitment opportunities to dentists for providing their services at the post of Short service commission Dental Officer. Each year the Indian Army advertises recruitment of these dental officers for a given number of vacancies. Recruited through NEET-MDS examination conducted by NBE, the aspirants have to opt for the DO section while filling the form for NEET-MDS itself.

After shortlisting on the basis of the marks obtained in the NEET-MDS, further filtering is done on the basis of interview and medical examination .

Once deemed fit , dental officers are recruited on a contractual basis for a tenure of 5 years which  is further extendable by 5 years and another 4 years based on laid down criteria.

A maximum of three chances are given to serving SSC officers for grant of Departmental Permanent Commission which can be availed as under:-

(a)      Two chances can be availed between 2-4 years of active service and the  third chance can only be availed between 5-8 years of service.

(b)      Age of candidates applying for Departmental Permanent Commission (DPC)  should not be more than 30 yrs for BDS and 35 yrs for MDS candidates as on 31  Dec of the year of application for DPC.

  2. Postings in adverse conditions

  3. Excellent public and professional exposure

All in all, Army Dental Corps is an excellent career option that transforms one not only professionally but personally as well. Indian Army in itself is one of a kind and once in a lifetime

opportunity that changes the outlook of a person 360 degrees.

3.Railway Dental Services

Various zones of the Indian Railways release career news time to time on its website and various newspapers for recruitment of dentists on contractual as well as permanent basis. For applying to these posts , dentists generally require 3- 4 years of work experience post BDS. In addition to this , Dentists must have a valid registration from a state dental council/DCI. The payscale is pretty nice , however the vacancies are very less and are released on vague basis.

Aspiring Dentists are required to fill the detailed application form along with attested copies and send it to the office via post or mail. Post which they may be called for an interview.

4. DentalDoctors/Dental Officers

Various Public Sector Undertakings such as BHEL, SAIL,GAIL,IOC release requirement of dentists to render their services on a contractual/permanent basis. Dentists are recruited on the basis of written examination followed by an interview or sometimes called directly for a walk in interview.

Similarly, state public sector commissions release vacancies for the post of Dental Officers. These vacancies however are very sparsed and are not guaranteed to be released every year. Hence the competition becomes quite high.

Additional work experience is required if one is graduated with a BDS. In case of MDS , the need of work experience is generally waived off.
